Zaccaria Pinball has expanded quite a bit since it launched into Early Access and while it’s had some growing pains it’s rapidly become a collection that can easily stand beside Pinball Arcade and Pinball FX. The multiple styles of table makes for a nice contrast, letting you hop between old and new pinball designs depending on mood. Other remakes like Space Shuttle play looser with the original, just borrowing some art cues and very little beyond that. It’s a nice layout with plenty to shoot for, with an unmistakably modern feel to the table. The targets are three banks instead of two, there are now multiple lanes leading to different areas, and a ramp feeds into a wire lane that divides to send the ball to the right or left flipper, alternating between shots. House of Diamonds 2017 uses the old table art and backglass, for example, and keeps the theme of hitting all ten number-card targets to light up a face card, but everything else is new. These tables are unique layouts, taking the theme of the originals plus their notable features and creating an all-new layout around them. ZACCARIA PINBALL UPDATE
The first table to get released (a week after the preview went live, of course) was Shooting the Rapids, and since then it’s been joined by update versions of Space Shuttle, Combat, Circus, Earth Wind Fire, and just today saw House of Diamonds. Yes, Zaccaria Pinball is crossplay compatible with Other Platforms. It’s still Early Access, getting regular bug fixes and physics updates, but the thing that didn’t make the preview last year was that there are also new tables with a more modern flair being designed around the old Zaccaria Pinball themes. The VR version is fantastic, making it hard to go back to non-VR pinball, and if all the options and tables are available as too many DLC pieces the all-in-one Platinum version simplifies the process nicely. Zaccaria Pinball was a manufacturer pumping out tables from the mid-70s to late 80s, and while the design is very much of the time, it’s also nicely refreshing as a contrast to today’s machines.
It grew from mobile onto PC, bringing a compendium of dozens (literally) of tables with it, and while they’re all fairly old and feel it, they’re a fun reminder of a different era and play nicely once you get used to the style.
